MANIFESTO / RESEARCH

To get started with my manifesto, I decided to start researching what manifesto really is and find some examples to help me understand the contents and the different ways of presenting them.

In the beginning, I found a dictionary definition of the manifesto: ”a public declaration of policy and aims, especially one issued before an election by a political party or candidate.”
Design Against Monoculture, Noah Scalin, 2001
This manifesto focuses on the purpose of design, and how it should be used. It questions what kind of work designers should do – whether they should work for big corporations, or create designs which could improve society. Designers should “take responsibility for the powerful communications skills they wield and to consider carefully their effects.”

I really like that this manifesto manages to have an impact despite being very short (short but powerful). The use of black type makes the design focus on scale and hierarchy to make it more effective. The manifesto has been printed using 'traditional woodblock techniques' as it gives the paper depth.

This is it, Apple. 2013

The next example shows manifesto created by Apple. It shows how the idea of their product is important. This manifesto could be applied to all areas of design, as it focuses on an experience, and how the user experiences a product or design.

First Things First, Ken Garland, 1964

first things first

The manifesto seems quite sarcastic, as though the author is making fun of the state of the advertising industry to incite change. It manages to get to the point across effectively, and I think it does work for the audience 'colleagues, students and others who may be interested'. I really like this design as its simple and clear combining typography, layout, and text. The simplicity of the type on the left draws attention to the text as its the first thing the reader will notice.
